After winter arrives, our thoughts turn to Christmas. For some, this happens in November, for others it is in December. In all the hustle and bustle, we can overlook the hazards and happenings that cause our pets to not have a happy holiday season! Here’s a few suggestions to keep the season merry and bright for all the toes and tails in the family.

Decorating Do’s

Some of our pets dive into the decorating as much as we do! Who else has had their cat appear as the “angel” topper on the tree? Making sure that the tree is secure, cords hidden out of reach, and decorations are pet friendly will save everyone’s sanity, and the tree! Glass decorations are sharp if broken; while mistletoe, poinsettia, tinsel and string can result in a trip to the vet clinic when ingested!

Why not use your creativity to make felt decorations, homemade clay or wooden ornaments? Make it a family event, create likenesses of your pets, and let your imagination fly! Besides being safer, you can use these beauties to diffuse CPTG essential oils to create your holiday atmosphere.

Company and Creature Comforts

The sensory overload the holidays bring is understandable to us, but may startle our pets! The changes in routine and influx of guests can be unsettling. Ensure your pets have a safe place they can escape to, like a kennel or bedroom, that is comforting to them. Taking some time between now and the holidays to imprint soothing scents from CPTG essential oils like Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Vetiver, Cedarwood, and Copaiba during quiet snuggles with you, will go a long way in keeping everyone content. Just before company arrives, you can put your pets unique calming blend on your diffusing decorations and in their safe haven.

Festive Feasting

All of the delicious food that we indulge in during the holiday is not always good for our own health, and can be hazardous to our pets health! Table scraps are too high in salt and fat for our pets metabolisms. Also, onions, garlic, many types of nuts, chocolate, and avocado are toxic to them. Ensure that our sugar free treats containing xylitol stay out of reach, as that ingredient is also very toxic to our pets.

If you do want to treat your pet, consider making homemade treats so you don’t feel they are left out of the celebrations. You can even add a drop or two of CPTG essential oils to boost their health! As with all treats, we don’t want to give too many, resulting in our pets joining us in our New Year’s resolution to lose weight.

Remember that if anything amiss does occur, to contact your veterinarian. Ask in advance about their holiday office hours, and what availability there is for after hours emergencies. Knowing this will help you to stay calm. Have patience, because their staff is leaving their loved ones to help yours!

Keeping these suggestions in mind, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas season with your family and pets. Meow’ry Christmas from all of us in the Toes and Tails Wellness household!

My name is Nina Munckhof, and I am Toes and Tails Wellness!

When my twins were born in 2015, I went on maternity leave from my 14 year career as a Registered Veterinary Technician. Educating clients about their pet's health and wellness needs was a highlight of my job, and I was going to miss it! In my new career as a mom, I wanted alternative options to household cleaners, leading me to discover doTERRA! The physical, mental and emotional support that these oils have provided my family is amazing. Educating about the safe use of doTERRA's Certified Pure Tested Grade essential oils is enabling me to combine my veterinary experience and love of animals with this passion for essential oils!
